STORM THORGERSON TO MAKE APPEARANCE
STORM THORGERSON TALKS
Being held in the shadow of the building which was the subject of arguably Pink Floyd's best loved album cover, Animals, Storm Thorgerson will make an appearance today (October 19) and talk about how the Animals picture came about. The event will be held at the Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park, directly adjacent to the Power Station where the shot was taken. In addition, Storm has recently been working with a German artist, Thomas Kilpper, on a project outside the gallery….an enormous pig sculpture using wood from Battersea Park; lying on its back, like the crashed Pink Floyd pig, Algie.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS....
Word has been spreading worldwide about the recently published book by Vernon Fitch and Richard Mahon. “Comfortably Numb - A History of “The Wall, 1978-1981”, published on July 25th, is a richly illustrated and detailed coffee table book that concerns itself solely with that album, The Wall. Research for the book took over ten years and covers everyone involved with the album and live show - from the band themselves, to designers, to sound engineers. Apart from the engaging text, many of these people have also contributed their own, previously unseen pictures, which are included in the book. In total there are over 400 pictures in the book. Hmmm. Think News thinks this sounds like a great Christmas present.

TRAVELING GUITARS
Just in case you might happen to wake up some morning and find yourself in Paris, France, some point over the next three months, an exhibition at the Cite de la Musique could be worth a visit after figuring out how in the hell you got there in the first place. "Travelling Guitars", running from October 5th through to January 14th 2007, is a look at the development of the guitar, from the earliest days through to the current breed of electric guitar. Being held at the same venue as 2003's "Pink Floyd: Interstellar" exhibition, this new event includes a guitar that was at that earlier event, making a return appearance! David Gilmour's 1955 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, which he used on the "Another Brick In The Wall (part 2)" solo will sit alongside other legendary performers guitars, such as Pete Townshend’s, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, and Jimmy Page, amongst others. The exhibition doesn't just look at the role of the guitar in rock. It also looks at its influence on the world of the blues, jazz, and even classical music, along with thru film montages covering the history of the instrument, and classic performances.

PINK FLOYD LULLABIES?!?
Yes! You have read correctly.
Hitting stores on September 19th from Baby Rock Records is "Rockabye Baby - Lullaby Renditions Of Pink Floyd". A spokesperson from Baby Rock Records said, "We couldn’t think of a band more deserving of the lullaby treatment than Pink Floyd. The sounds of this legendary group speak to the parts of the brain that are wide awake during that lovely dream state called REM. They are musical journeys to the bright side of the moon and beyond. While your child is comfortably sleeping, these lullabies will work to open their mind’s eye as only Pink Floyd can. Your crazy little diamond is going to shine on in a dreamland courtesy of Baby Rock. You’re gonna wish you were there..." The album contains tinkly, if not strange, versions of tracks such as Time, Mother, Us and Them, and Brain Damage. To hear excerpts of each track, visit BabyRockRecords.com, where you can also see the cover - pig head balloons!

RELEASE: The Rough Guide to Pink Floyd
Published today in Europe (in Canada, September 5th, and the USA, October 2nd) is a new addition to the bookshelves: Toby Manning's "Rough Guide to Pink Floyd";

The first part of the book ("The Story") is a well-researched and well-paced look at the band's history. Using many quotes from the band members and other key personnel, it sets out their career well and would particularly suit those fairly new to the band. All Floyd fans will find things of interest here, as events are put into a proper timeline so normally disconnected events are brought together, rather than treated as completely seperate entities. Manning makes a good attempt at making sense of the band break-up and "rebirth" period, with a particular focus on the Gilmour, Mason and Wright situation. The pressures and feelings of each are gently probed, without falling into the trap of many books of taking sides with either Roger, or the others.

The second part of the book ("The Music") takes a measured and critical look at each album in turn, then lists "Floyd's Finest 50" tracks, ordered by era. It has a wrap-up of the various soundtracks, compilations, and a scoot through the very tip of the very large iceberg of bootlegs. The solo albums are then covered, along with the various band members' session works.

The final part ("Floydology") takes a look at the various films that the band/members soundtracked, along with live video releases, running from the very earliest examples right up to some of the more dubious (in content and quality) "unauthorised" releases of the last couple of years. There's also a look at the various books that have been published over the years, drawing into sharp relief the pros and cons of each; an analysis of the various Floyd websites (BD comes off rather well!); and a look at tribute bands, tribute albums, and cover versions.

DAVID GILMOUR AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS
More details emerged today of David Gilmour's upcoming appearance at London's Abbey Road Studios. David and his full touring band will be in Studio One, the largest at the Studios, on Tuesday, August 29th. Studio One is where many classic orchestral scores and recordings have been made over the years, from film soundtracks through to orchestral segments on David's "On An Island" album.

This is for his part in a major new music series - Live From Abbey Road - which will see some of the world's biggest artists performing their songs there. Other artists due to take part (on other days) include The Who, Paul Simon and Diana Ross.

The twelve, sixty minute specials will have their premiere on the UK's Channel 4 TV in November 2006, coinciding with the studios' 75th anniversary. David's special could well be on November 25th/26th, but this is to be confirmed.

The good news for all you Floyd fans out there is that the series will be shown internationally, as the distribution rights have been picked up by a major media concern. As we get details of the show in various countries we will let you know, but we understand that these screenings will not be until next year

UPCOMING AUCTION OF SYD FINAL BELONGINGS

Items from the estate of Syd Barrett, including signed artwork never seen before, will be coming up for auction at Cheffins Auctioneers in Cambridge in their Fine Art Sale on 29th and 30th November. The auctioneers say that the sale will consist of items left by Syd in his Cambridge house. Syd spent his last years living a quiet, yet content, life in the town. Both of his bikes, which he had used every day for visits to the local shops and pub, were hand painted by him and will be included in the sale. Other items will include several pieces of furniture which Syd customised or made himself, along with the easel, paints and paint table which Syd used regularly to paint. The History of Art and Art in general were great loves of his, and this is seen in his artwork (an example from the 1970's shown to the right), his library and his writings, some of which were to be the foundations of an Art History book he was writing. The sale will also include other lots of various books, homemade speakers and a classical guitar. Viewing for the sale will take place from the previous Sunday and a full colour catalogue will be available. The sale will also be available to view online at www.cheffins.co.uk.
